Nelle opere polemiche di parte cristiana si assiste spesso a una assimilazione dei giudei agli eretici e viceversa, come soggetti sempre più lontani dall’ortodossia dottrinale: a seconda delle diverse contingenze storiche e delle diverse aree geografiche, nuove eresie vengono menzionate e aggiunte all’elenco delle controversie dottrinali, per le quali la polemica contro i giudei viene proposta come origine e come modello. È proprio la polemica con i giudei che può essere considerata strumento per consolidare la propria identità religiosa per differentiam nei confronti di altri gruppi religiosi. Assimilare giudei ed eretici da parte cristiana non rappresentò soltanto la condanna di un “errore”: giudei ed eretici, in diversi periodi e in diversi ambienti, furono considerati pericoli reali per l’identità cristiana, per l’ortodossia e perfino per l’incolumità della comunità. I contributi – di esperti di cultura latina, greco bizantina, ebraica, copta – affrontano tali problematiche in un arco cronologico cha va dai primi secoli cristiani all’alto medioevo.

In Christian polemical works, Jews are often equated with heretics and vice versa, as both deviate from orthodoxy. Depending on the different historical circumstances and the different geographical areas, new heresies are mentioned and added in the context of doctrinal controversies that propose polemics against the Jews as both an origin and a model. In particular, the anti-Jewish controversy can be seen as an instrument for consolidating religious identity per differentiam in comparison to other religious groups. The assimilation of Jews and heretics on the Christian side did not only mean the condemnation of “error”. Jews and heretics were seen in different eras and in different circles as a current threat to Christian identity and orthodoxy in particular. The contributions by experts in Latin, Byzantine Greek, Hebrew and Coptic deal with these topics in a chronological framework that stretches from the early Christian centuries to the High Middle Ages.
