Philo of Alexandria’s Jewish Scepticism

Philo of Alexandria is commonly understood as a dogmatic thinker who read his own preconceived theological doctrines into the Septuagint through allegorical exegesis. This special issue, comprising seven contributions, offers a more nuanced portrait. It presents Philo not only as a crucial witness to ancient sceptical traditions but also as a thinker who actively and repeatedly draws on sceptical forms of reasoning to express and undergird his Jewish philosophical worldview. Each article offers a distinct perspective on this theme, and together they show how deeply sceptical notions permeate Philo’s thought, giving rise to a unique blend of scepticism and dogmatism. The contributions explore, among other aspects, his exegetical methods, philosophical ideas and terminologies, interpretation of scriptural motifs, and epistemological framework.

Si ritiene comunemente che Filone di Alessandria sia stato un pensatore dogmatico, che ricorreva all'esegesi allegorica per leggere la LXX secondo la propria teologia preconcetta. Questo fascicolo monografico, che comprende sette contributi, offre un ritratto di Filone più ricco di sfumature, presentandolo non solo come importantissimo testimone delle tradizioni scettiche antiche, ma anche come pensatore che si fonda attivamente e ripetutamente su modi di ragionamento scettici per dare espressione e fondamento alla sua Weltanschauung filosofica ebraica. Ciascun articolo fornisce una prospettiva specifica su questo tema, e tutti gli articoli nel loro insieme mostrano quanto profondamente il pensiero di Filone fosse permeato da concezioni scettiche, venendo così a costituire una combinazione unica di scetticismo e dogmatismo. I contributi esplorano tra l'altro la metodologia esegetica di Filone, le sue idee filosofiche e la relativa terminologia, la sua interpretazione di temi scritturistici e la struttura epistemologica della sua opera.
