Seneca, Phaedra

I contributi pubblicati in questo fascicolo fanno seguito al Workshop sulla  Fedra di Seneca, organizzato nel marzo 2023 a Cortona dalla Scuola Normale Superiore e da Princeton University. Essi analizzano la tragedia senecana, focalizzando l’attenzione su diverse tematiche: la mente inquieta di Fedra, sconvolta dall’amore non corrisposto per il figliastro Ippolito; la caratterizzazione dei personaggi principali (in particolare la Nutrice e il Messaggero) anche in relazione con i loro modelli; l’approccio innovativo di Seneca al mito; gli elementi di filosofia stoica che influenzano il testo; il  ruolo del coro, riconsiderato sulla base del confronto con il resto del corpus senecano e con i suoi modelli tragici greci; la cornice narrativa all’interno della quale gli avvenimenti descritti richiamano l’avventura di Teseo nel labirinto; i precedenti letterari consapevolmente introdotti (numerosi, per esempio, gli intertesti lucreziani) e infine la rottura dei sistemi linguistici e comunicativi.

The articles published in this issue are the result of the Workshop on Seneca's Phaedra organised by Scuola Normale Superiore and Princeton University in Cortona in March 2023.   They analyse Seneca's tragedy, focusing on various themes: the restless mind of Phaedra, troubled by her unrequited love for her stepson Hippolytus; the characterisation of the main protagonists (especially the Nurse and the Messenger), also in relation to their models; Seneca's innovative approach to the myth; the elements of Stoic philosophy that influence the text; the role of the chorus, reconsidered in comparison with the rest of Seneca's corpus and with his Greek tragic models; the narrative framework in which the events described recall Theseus' adventure in the labyrinth; the literary precedents consciously introduced (there are numerous Lucretian intertexts, for example; and, finally, the rupture in the linguistic and communicative systems.
